The Dancing Fountain

Artist: Alexis Richter

Location: Victoria Park, Stanhope Road

All three days

The Dancing Fountain is a self-choreographing water machine that transforms almost any piece of music into a captivating water and light performance, unfolding in real-time before your eyes. Nothing is pre-programmed – every movement and colour is interpreted directly from the music fed into the fountain, all on the fly.

The aim is to capture the drama, emotion, and instrumentation of the music as fully as possible, both in the water display and within the acoustic bubble surrounding the fountain. We run continuous shows, often featuring ‘epic’ music, guiding audiences on musical journeys where the spontaneously interacting visuals and beautiful melodies deepen their appreciation of the music.

The synaesthetic experience consistently uplifts the audience, evoking smiles and excitement—especially from children, who eagerly anticipate the moment a musical crescendo can trigger a brief over splash. This visceral experience makes the fountain more than just a machine. After years of development, “She” feels alive, with an organic personality that captivates the audience under her enchanting spell.

Artist Bio:

Alexis Richter is an engineer, kinetic artist, garden designer, and frustrated musician with a deep, enduring passion for water, light, music, and the dramatic potential of outdoor spaces. For over a decade, these passions have driven his work, enabling him to express the emotional depth of his favourite music in a physical form—becoming a “visual musician” who collaborates with sound to create the immersive experience of an outdoor concert.

“It all began with the invention of my spinning turbine, which produced a mesmerising helical column of water. I quickly realised it was more than just fluid movement—it was a dynamic canvas, offering endless possibilities for interpreting music through its motion.”

Alexis’ fascination with water dates back to his childhood, a passion that never waned:
“Some people feel they have a book or painting inside them. I always felt I had a water machine in me.”

His work is driven by constant evolution, with long winter nights spent perfecting the art of augmenting beautiful music with stylised water choreography. “Pre-programming always felt like a cheat. I want my machine to ‘feel’ the music,” he explains. His ultimate goal remains unchanged: to visually honour the “best music in the world.”
