Through The Eyes Of Insects

Artist: James Wylie

Location: The Green House, Victoria Park

All three days

We share Earth with a library of forgotten wonders. We may walk the same planet, but our worlds are alien to each other. Here, in the insect’s World captured with photography, we can discover a new relationship with them. Witness them in a way never seen before, explore their lesser-known stories, and be inspired to wonder what else might be out there.

Through the Eyes of Insects uses ultraviolet-induced visible fluorescence photography (UVIVF) to display insects, and other arthropods within the UK, in a new light. It utilises naturally occurring ultraviolet fluorescence, called biofluorescence, within these species to tell the story of the intricacies of insects’ vision; their World is entirely different from our own due to their ability to see into the ultraviolet light spectrum.

Walk through this interactive photography exhibition and immerse yourself in a hidden World. Large-scale, backlit prints light up the newly build “Green House”, a hub for the community in the middle of Victoria Park.

Insects can see things we cannot fathom, so they can teach us that there is more to life on planet Earth than we already know. Let the inspiration of endless possibility flow into designing your own glowing insect for the community-made UV light installation!

Reconnect with the often disregarded, misunderstood and even feared members of the natural world. This is their invisible reality for us to explore.

Artist Bio:

James Wylie believes in challenging our perceptions about the natural world, one species at a time. He uses the concrete nature of photography to communicate conceptual ideas surrounding the true nature of reality.

Specialising in ultraviolet photography since 2020, his UV portfolio, dubbed “The Collection”, now holds over one hundred different insect & plant species. Previously his work has been shortlisted for the Student Association of Photographers Awards 2021, exhibited at the G7 summit in Cornwall, and at Kings Park & Botanic Garden in Perth, Australia. He recently created a photo series about species of native bees in collaboration with the Western Australian Museum, called “True Blue”.

James continues to add to The Collection with species from all over the globe, holding the ambition to give people everywhere a reason to care about the planet.
