Flow: Drawing with Light

Artist: Jeannie Driver in collaboration with Hoop Shaker & Hula Monkeys

Location: St Mary's Churchyard, Fratton

All three days

Flow: Drawing with Light is a collaboration between hula-hooping expert Sally, who leads Hoop Shaker and Hula Monkeys classes, and contemporary artist Jeannie Driver, also an enthusiastic “hula monkey” inspired by LED hula hoops. Together, they’ve brought a team of hoopers to We Shine 2024.

Watch as the team performs, capturing lines of light that intersect, overlap, and create dynamic patterns in space. Grab your cameras and immerse yourself in the magic! After each performance, join the team to learn some moves and try out the LED hoops yourself. Experience how the endless flow of the hula hoop can unlock limitless possibilities – just like the circle itself.

LED hula hoop performances will occur at: 17:30, 18:00, 18:30, 19:00, 19:30, 20:00, 20:30.

‘Give it a Go’ sessions, where the team will show you simple moves to create your own light traces will be hosted between 5pm and 9pm between performances.

Artist Bio:

Jeannie Driver is an artist based in Studio 12 at Art Space Portsmouth. Her drawing installations have been exhibited nationally in both commercial and public galleries. With a strong background in collaborative work, she has developed numerous projects in public art, relational aesthetics, and social engagement.

Driver’s practice combines drawings on paper with expansive, installed drawings that evolve over time and space. These processes are both quietly contemplative and boldly physical, exploring space, time, repetition, and materiality. Her most recent series focuses on the circle, using it as both a metaphor and a point of departure.

Hoop Shaker, also known as Sally, has been performing and teaching hula hooping for over 16 years, entertaining at events across the South. Her Hoop Shaker classes go beyond fitness—they offer a holistic approach to health and well-being, blending exercise with fun in a relaxed, social setting. This balance of movement, creativity, and joy makes her classes unique.

Hula hooping not only strengthens the body but also promotes mental wellness, reduces anxiety, and encourages creative self-expression. For adults, it increases flexibility, builds strength, and fosters personal expression through movement. For children, it’s a playful way to improve coordination, embrace a healthy lifestyle, and enjoy quality family time, bridging the generational gap.
